Going strong at 91

At 91, Howard Hall of Frankfort, Ky., starts every day with push-ups, sit-ups and a 2-mile walk as part of his training for the senior games. Hall has traveled nationwide to compete and has a collection of more than 600 medals. In 2011 he competed in Kentucky’s first senior games, taking home several gold medals.

A new life through Eagle’s eyes

They say the bond between a man and his dog is hard to break and that holds true for Eric Redmon of Frankfort, Ky., and his dog Eagle. Redmon is an Iraq war army veteran and suffers from severe post-traumatic stress disorder. Eagle is his service dog trained to help him in a variety of situations from checking the house for intruders before Redmon enters after returning home to waking him up from a nightmare by turning on the lights and pulling the blankets off the bed. Redmon credits his ability to reconnect with his family and society solely to Eagle. “Not only has he given me my life back he’s really given me my family back,” Redmon said.

Down and dirty for a good cause

About 1,000 people competed in the Capitol City River Dash featuring several muddy obstacles through 3.2 miles of mountain bike trails at Capitol View Park in Frankfort, Ky. Competitors climbed rope ladders, tumbled into mud pits, slid down a plastic drainpipe into the Kentucky River and more.

A wedding dress wish come true

Ruth Sullivan, of Frankfort, Ky., always dreamed of wearing a beautiful wedding dress, and at 92 her dream finally came true. The Ashwood Place retirement home resident made a wish through the organization Second Wind Dreams to try on wedding dresses. After 67 years since her marriage to Norm Sullivan in October 1946 when she couldn’t afford a formal wedding dress for the occasion, Second Wind Dreams granted her wish by sending her to David’s Bridal in Lexington.
